Nas and Olu Dara Jones

Father and son on stage together

First Sunday Blues

Rapper Nas (Nasir Jones) is the son of Olu Dara Jones, my featured artist this week. Nas actually encouraged his dad to start recording his own stuff.

Dara has a style immersed in African-American tradition, playing an eclectic mix of blues, jazz, and storytelling, with tinges of funk, African popular music and reggae. [via]

Sounds cool, right? His groove is definitely that — mellow, chill, and laying down the vibe in Rain Shower

Note That Might Interest Only Me

Dara also co-wrote and starred in Blues Rooms, a combination of Blues music, theater, and dance way back in the ’90s — certainly wouldn’t mind seeing a revival of that show some time!
